Fine motor skills are small movements using the hands and fingers. These skills help your baby reach, grasp, and explore objects as they learn about their world.

4-6 Months Old
Holds a toy when placed in hand
Uses arms to purposely swing at toys
Brings hands to mouth consistently
Pushes up onto elbows/forearms when on tummy
6-9 Months Old
Shakes and bangs rattles
Brings toys to mouth
Uses a raking grasp
Transfers objects from one hand to the other
Keeps hands open and releazed most of the time
Starting to have to pick up small food like Cheerios
9-12 Months Old
Grasps with thumb and 2 fingers
Pincer grasp develops; picks up cereal/small objects with thumb index finger
Imitates tool use (e.g. brushing hair, using a toothbrush)
Removes socks
Fine motor grasp patterns are specific ways the hand and fingers coordinate to hold, manipulate, and control objects
Palmar Grasp
Develops between 4-6 months of age. Allows baby to intentionally grasp an object in their palm and wrap all fingers around it
Raking Grasp
The ability to intentionally use all fingers to "rake" an object in palm of their hand. Typically develops between 6-7 months
Inferior Pincer Grasp
The ability to pick up small objects between the pads of their thumb and forefinger. Typically develops between 7-8 months.
Superior Pincer Grasp
The ability to pick up small objects between the tips of the thumb and forefinger. Typically develops between 9-12 months.
this is the basis for all other areas of child development
3-6 Months
Reaches for toys using both arms
Begins to transfer objects from one hand to another
Will hold their hands together
Begins to notice objects a few feet away
6-9 Months
Sit and reaches for toys
Picks up small objects with thumbs and fingers
Child bangs small blocks together
9-12 Months
Child holds multiple cubes or toys
Child places small food pellets and or cubes in a cup
Removes stickers
Turns pages in a book
